The Story of Mujrim
This joke was related to me by my brother Khalil - it is, of course, entirely fictitious, and any resemblance to real events or persons is pure coincidence!
There was a man called Mujrim who was not in the habit of attending the congregational prayers at the mosque. A friend asked him why, and Mujrim replied that every time the Imam of the prayer recited a chapter of the Qur'an which contained verses of punishment, Mujrim felt that they were directed at him. "What nonsense!", exclaimed his friend, and convinced the very reluctant Mujrim to come to the Maghrib prayer.
That night, a nervous Mujrim lined up in the first row of prayers, next to his friend. After the Fatihah, the Imam began to recite the 77th Chapter "Mursalat" (Those Sent Forth).
With alarm, Mujrim realised that the Chapter was describing the events of the Final Day. "I am safe in the front row - after all that's where the greatest blessing lies", he consoled himself.
Suddenly, he heard:
"Woe on that day to the beliers. Did We not destroy the ones in the front?" (77:15,16)
At once Mujrim began to tremble. "I knew it!", he thought, "its me in the front!"
He tried to back into the next row, without being too obvious. As soon as he was in the next line he began to breath a little easier. But then he heard:
"Then we made the next people follow them." (77:17)
His breath caught in his throat and his heart began to flutter in his chest. With a sense of doom, Mujrim awaited the next verse. And the Imam said:
And this is what we will do to the Mujrims (guilty ones)" (77:18)
With a wail of terror Mujrim ran out of the mosque shouting "I told you, I told you!"
